With reference to Article No. 121 of the Colonial
Audit Regulations, 1893, I am directed by the Comptroller
and Auditor General to request that you will lay before the
Secretary of State, the accompanying Estimate of the amount
which will be required for the cost of Audit of the Accounts
of the Colony of Hong Kong for the year 1898,

Under the Head of "Local Charges
— "Emoluments", the Estimate for the salary of the Messenger
in the Local Audit Office has been increased from $7 a
month the amount provided in 1897 to $8 a month.
The increase has been made on the recommendation of the
Local Auditor, who has explained that formerly a room was
provided in which the Messenger lived with his wife and
family, but that, at the present time, females are not
allowed to live in the quarters.
3. The Share of Home Expenditure included in the
Estimate, has been calculated in accordance with the arrangement sanctioned in your letter, No. 10395/97, of the
12th ultimo.
